The Offer:
GL Homes (Seven Bridges in Delray/Boca Raton) is a local developer offering up $10 million dollars PLUS 100 acres of land for a new high school to be built in west Boynton Beach, Florida.
The Reason:
Why exactly would a developer be so generous with their money? Are they hoping to help out our local youth succeed? Are they trying to make a dent in the disgusting overcrowding that is taking place at our schools (9 out of 23 local high schools are filled beyond capacity, another 5 are over 95% capacity)? I sure hope this is fueling their offer, but at the bottom of it they are trying to win over the local government and its residents.
The Issue:
GL Homes is hoping to get Palm Beach County to change it’s development rules so it can build more homes in the Agricultural Reserve. GL Homes proposes to preserve the 4,900-acre Indian Trails Grove tract it owns west of The Acreage, where it has county approval to build 3,900 homes, and instead build those homes in the reserve. Some rules have made pretty tricky to build in the reserve. These large-scale projects make it tough to build now because much of the reserve’s land is under preservation is already farmed or developed on.
What Are People Saying?
Residents is the Loxahatchee area like the plan saying the reservoir could help out with flooding problems. During a recent school meeting several residents spoke in favor of the production. “We need new schools, our kids are jammed in there like sardines.”
What Should Happen?
I believe we should protect our lands, conserving nature is extremely important. Florida’s housing market is booming right now and there doesn’t seem to be any signs of it slowing in the future. A new school on Boynton Beach would do wonders. GL Homes is trying to make their pockets deeper, but they also want to help the community.
