Today, it seems like almost every day is tied to a “national holiday.” However, this Friday is National Donut Day and carries on a legacy dating back to 1938.
During World War I, it was noted that many of the servicemen were homesick and utterly miserable. In efforts to cheer them up, the women (called “Donut Lassies) would scrape up the limited flour, sugar, and oil to make donuts and deliver to the soldiers. National Donut Day was established in 1938 by the Chicago branch of the Salvation Army to honor these compassionate women and all of their efforts.
To say We the People love donuts, would be a total understatement. A 2017 survey conducted by Dawn, a global bakery ingredient supplier, found that the average American eats approximately 31 donuts a year – averaging at about 2-3 donuts per month.
If you’re anything like us, National Donut Day gives us an excuse to devour a dozen by ourselves – in honor of a great cause. No shame in our donut game! Check out some of these amazing donut deals in Palm Beach County.
