There’s a new attraction in Boca that’s making the local residents feel a bit… trapped.
The Master Escape Room gives a daring new highlight to the entertainment district of the city. You and seven of your friends are literally locked in a room for up to an hour with slim chance of getting out. While inside your team solves a series of interconnected puzzles, each leading to the next. Of course all of this is happening while a big clock steadily counts down, marking the time until your supposed demise and loss of the game. If you solve all the puzzle before the buzzer then you are freed from the room and win the exclusive title of having “survived” the escape room. If you do not survive you get a nice parting gift, a sticker that says, “I ALMOST survived”, which doesn’t generate the exact same amount of pride.
This is not easy.
You’ll quickly understand why companies march their employees into the escape room as a team building exercise. Having that many people working on one problem forces the group to exhibit communication skills, a shared judgement and overwhelming amount of patience. Then again, “It really depends on the group of people you’re with,” says one local goer.
Secrecy is law around The Master Escape Room.
It’s strongly encouraged that no one give away any of the secrets or answers of the escape room, though some take it an extra step further. “My friends didn’t even tell me what was going on.” Apparently, one local was asked out to dinner with her friends, but when they got to the location they were explained that there was an emergency at the Centers for Disease Control and unless they were able to solve the puzzles, they would not be able to escape quarantine and thus die a gruesome death.
Gruesome deaths are more common than you may think. Only about a third of the groups that enter the escape rooms successfully get out in the allotted time.
There are a variety of themes and situations that change over time and by location. The emergency at the CDC is just one example. Currently there is an organized crime theme where your group acts as an investigator. There another based on spooky, ancient Egyptian mythology.
The Master Escape Room does typically have a younger crowd, but it certainly could be used by any age group, especially if a party showed up with the necessary number of people. It just depends on if you think you and your friends have what it takes to survive.
In any case, this has been seen as a fun and totally unique way to spend some time. Even a treatment center for alcohol and drug abuse brought its clients there to help build communal relations and practice communication. Though, there haven’t been any reports of escape rooms claiming to be counseling for couples or families.
