Muggy, humid, rainy; a recipe for hair disaster. Here in South Florida, I constantly worry about sweating off my makeup and messing up my hair. But, all that changed when I walked into PeterMark salon!
I was skeptical about maintaining a styled coif for more than an hour, but the air conditioned, all white, pristine interior of the salon gave me hope. I sat down with Adam Dworetzky to get my hair done and let me tell you, I’m glad I did!
Adam’s a cosmetologist, albeit a late bloomer, but there is no denying he’s an up-and-coming star in the hair world. He received his license at twenty-three and has now, a year later, developed a large local fan base. This is likely because Adam tends to stray from the ordinary; he states that although he was taught to do certain cuts at Aveda Institute, he has since learned to think outside the box.
Steeped in basic, ’90s era styles, Adam wanted to do something different, something momentary that reflects today’s popular styles. Something based on Kylie Jenner’s hair from this morning’s Snapchat or what Taylor Swift wore on the red carpet last night.
So, Adam taught himself how to create current styles through YouTube videos and Instagram accounts. He even taught himself how to barber online (cosmetology and barbering are entirely different breeds)! He’s since become an expert at barbering. He does this by using sheers, similar to razors, in order to create texture.
Speaking of razors, did you know they’re synonymous with texture and in Florida, especially in the summer months, texture is synonymous with frizz? Adam sometimes uses razors, be it very precisely. He cuts in a subtle manner to minimize frizz and allow you to style easily at home.
Half of hair styling for Adam (or anyone, for that matter) is gauging who his clients are. He cuts their unique personality and lifestyle into their hair. So, for someone like me, who rolls out of bed and runs to interview a local business, he cuts soft layers into my hair that take the weight off. He made my hair light and airy so it would move around me as I walked.
Adam did wonders for my hair. He told me we, as the clients, are his best form of advertisement and that we should look beautiful for days after our visit with him. He even goes as far as teaching each of his clients how to style their own hair so it looks professionally done every day.
No two haircuts are alike. Adam starts off his work with an intimate consultation with each client. He believes the worst question a stylist can ask, which ironically is the most common, is, “what are we doing with your hair today?” Instead, he asks personal questions about what people like about their hair. He asks what clients can’t live without. He asks about their Monday routine. He then compiles all of this information to create their perfect style.
Despite being a magician with women’s hair, Adam’s true talent actually lies in styling and cutting men’s hair. He knows men like to change up their look and told me that when it comes to men, 40% is cut and 60% is what they do on a Monday before work to style their hair. He helps guys find an easy routine. He promised me this typically consists of a maximum of four minutes and a blow dryer.
Adam takes photos and videos of his clients, which he posts on Instagram and his website. His number one priority is the quality of every cut. He’ll stop recording if it compromises that quality. His primary objective is to make us–his clients–look good. If we don’t walk out of the salon feeling beautiful, he hasn’t done his job.
Lucky for me, I was able to walk out with a gorgeous cut and an incredible video documenting the experience. Check it out below and stop by to see Adam Dworetzky at PeterMark salon!
