Well, it’s that time of year again! With school quickly coming to a close for many in the area, we at BocaNews thought it would be fun to do a little research to find the most exciting activities for children and families to do this summer that won’t break the bank. So I decided to take a field trip to find the most educational, safe and family friendly places Boca Raton has to offer.
1. Sugar Sand Park

Sugar Sand Park is a recreational facility located in Boca Raton, west of I-95, that offers a number of recreational activities for children of all ages. The park is home to a 132-acre area with a children’s Science Explorium, a hands-on science center that is geared toward children ages 5-12. The Willow Theatre, offering music, dance and theatrical performances for any age group, and their field house, which is a recreational center housing an indoor gymnasium, basketball courts, volleyball courts, and a hockey rink.
Sugar Sand Park also has a number of nature trails that are open year-round, a carousel and a science playground. Pricing varies for certain activities but in most areas, a donation of just $5.00 is asked from all park attendees! Some areas encourage parents and caregivers to be present for young children, which makes it the perfect opportunity for parents and children to learn together!
2. Gumbo Limbo Nature Center
1801 North Ocean Boulevard Boca Raton, FL 33432

Gumbo Limbo is a staple in Boca Raton when it comes to the care and rehabilitation of seafaring animals, but they also offer quite a few different family-friendly activities. The park is home to a number of different species of tropical fish, butterflies and sea turtles, as well as an assorted variety of plant life.
The center offers an environmental camp, a half-day, weeklong summer camp opportunity in which children and teens have the opportunity to learn about their surroundings while the staff incorporates fun and age appropriate activities. The park is open to families, groups and individuals with a suggested $5.00 donation!
3.Imagine That Creations

Imagine That is a paint-your-own pottery studio located in east Boca just north of Glades Blvd. The studio offers different activities for people of all ages and skill sets, with classes from learning to mold clay on a spinning wheel, to painting pre-fired ceramic creations.
Imagine That also holds a summer camp for children ages 5+ that begin June 3rd and last until August 19th. Pricing varies for certain summer camp packages, however for families looking to enjoy a day or night out, Imagine That is a sure-fire way (see what we did there?) to make beautiful, lasting creations.
4. Boca Raton Children’s Museum

Boca Raton Children’s Museum is absolutely a must-do activity for families this summer. The museum mostly caters to younger children and offers quite a few activities that teach anything from “grocery” shopping and healthy eating habits to a puppet and storytelling stage.
One of the activities even features a make-shift bank, where children act as bank tellers and must complete an age-appropriate math problem to receive a key, which then opens a safe deposit box with a prize inside! The Children’s Museum also offers a unique sensory arts program in which children are encouraged to use different artistic mediums, like paint, music and movement to enhance and stimulate the child’s sight, sound, and touch!
5. Patch Reef Park
2000 West Yamato Road, Boca Raton, FL, 33431

Patch Reef Park is absolutely one of the most beautiful places to spend family time this summer! The James A. Rutherford Community Center offers quite a few different educational classes, as well as opportunities for children to get involved in summer camp activities, like the Fishing Academy or Itty Bitty Baseball Academy.
The park also offers a fitness course for families to use, with various strength building exercises along a soft track around the expanse of the park. Playground equipment can be found in the area, with pavilions offering shade and comfortable seating. The park is open 7-days a week and admission to the park is free, however, the cost of summer camp activities may vary!
