What’s Happening?
I’m sure most of you know that there is a solar eclipse happening today, it’s a pretty big deal. Last time this happened was 99 years ago, so if you’re thinking about missing it, you shouldn’t. Here in South Florida, were not in the direct line of site like those in the Carolina’s, Tennessee, Missouri and other states in the path of the total solar eclipse. We’re still expected to see about 86% coverage down here in Boca Raton. If you are able to get outside and check it out, do yourself a favor and do it.
The Facts:
- A total solar eclipse will cross the United States from coast to coast on Monday. It will start on the west coast around 10am (Oregon) PST and end at 3pm EST on the East Coast (North Carolina
- Last total solar eclipse in the US was in 1918
- Eclipse chasers who have been doing this for decades say you should prepare to feel “changed forever” if this is your first total eclipse.
- Weather forecasts suggest that all of South Florida will have awesome weather for the eclipse. Clear skies and a nice breeze.
- Don’t stare directly at the sun, your Mom told you this when you were 5 years old, the same applies to this. It’s never a good idea to stare at a huge ball of fire in the sky, the sun is powerful.
- Wear sunglasses if you don’t have “eclipse glasses”, if you don’t have them by now good luck. They’re sold out almost everywhere.
- Some schools are giving kids the day off to check this out. Why? Because it’s a big deal.
When to Start Watching?
Here in South Florida the eclipse will start around 1pm and have 86% coverage at 2;48pm. I suggest to keep an eye out around 2 and get really excited around 2:30pm. It will be over around 3pm.
I hope everyone gets the chance to see this once in a lifetime event. I am sitting at my desk all day, but you better believe I will be outside watching this amazing occurrence.
